Oh the Oscars. A night of pretty dresses, boring speeches, occasionally a good joke and/or dance routine, and more or less everyone knows who is going to win and is just hoping for an upset or two. Because people can tell by now what will be at the Oscars. I call them “Oscar Sniffing Movies,” movies that are clearly designed to get an Oscar. They typically have either very strong casts or completely obscure casts, they are about “profound” subjects that are intentionally emotionally manipulative, and they are usually not very popular with the mainstream. The critical darlings. Some of them absolutely deserve it. There are a lot of the same names that pop up in the acting category, again because they probably deserve it (Meryl Streep baby I’m looking at you), but sometimes you have to go “really? Again? Sigh.” Anyway here’s a look at the nominations and my personal reactions to them. The exciting thing is that Billy Crystal is finally back. After years away. He has been one of my favorite comedic actors for a very long time, and I always enjoyed his Oscar presentations. I’m not a huge fan of Eddie Murphy, although I’m sure he would’ve done fine as a host, but yeah I’m psyched to see Billy. He wasn’t asked to host for eight years before this for no good reason. Welcome back, Billy!
