There are spoilers in this review. Duh.

Nooooooooooooo the season is over. How many months do we have to wait again until next season? Gah. I like to think that Frank’s murder of Lila being out in the open now means that maybe we can put to bed that original murder situation and focus on the aftermath of what’s going on now. We do wrap up the Hapstall storyline, so what’s going to happen next season? Hmmmm! As usual I have to give major props to Viola Davis for yet another killer performance; every season she ups her game if that’s even possible. I also hear that the actor who plays Oliver has been bumped up to regular next season! That’s great, I really like him. Previously on How To Get Away With Murder, Annalise found out from a drunken Laurel that Frank killed Lila. She ran away from them and her problems to go home to her mother. We saw in a flashback that Annalise feels responsible for Wes’ mother killing herself, and that she might be having a transference of emotion after her baby died at the same incident. The DA has been trying to catch Annalise in a lie and did give her and the team immunity to help with the Hapstall case. Philip has been creepily stalking everyone. Caleb went missing last week. Annalise tells Wes that his father is Wallace Mahoney, the rich guy who was forcing Rose to testify for his kid.

There’s a lot of moving parts in this episode. Annalise is home with her family, and her mother decides to throw her a party. Her father shows up and Annalise is horrified to find out her parents have reconciled considering he ran out on them several times. And cheated a bunch. Man, Annalise does not have great luck, does she? Oh who am I kidding, no one on this show does. Annalise struggles with accepting him into the home, while her sister sharply points out that her mother deserves a little happiness in her later life, and that her mind is starting to go a little. The most important part of Annalise going home is that she finally tells her mother she was pregnant and lost the baby. I was surprised she never told her, but also not surprised because their relationship is clearly a difficult one. Her mother decides to hold a funeral of sorts to help Annalise cope with her pain a little, and she reveals the baby’s name was Sam (Jr. I assume). Maybe this will mean that Annalise will stop transferring her grief/guilt over Sam Jr. and not coddle Wes as much? Wishful thinking. Nate also shows up to let her know the DA says they’ll arrest her if she doesn’t get back and turn herself in. So she’s like okay let’s do this shit.

Michaela is heartbroken to figure out that Caleb hasn’t disappeared, he’s working with the DA. He’s willing to turn on all of them. This means the DA is like I GOTCHA FINALLY at Annalise, except she still has an ace up her sleeve. When Philip attacked her, he wasn’t trying to hurt her, he actually had news for her. He didn’t kill the Hapstalls, Caleb did, and he had proof. They finally get Catherine to tell the truth that she covered for her brother and loved him, and it was him all along. It’s unfortunate it turned this way because I thought they subverted him as the obvious seeming bad guy. Sigh. Michaela really has terrible luck too. When the police go to get Caleb, he seemingly has killed himself to avoid jail time. I’m side eying that because things are rarely so simple on this show. He doesn’t seem like the kind of guy to go down easily either, but I guess we’ll see. It could be true. Or it could be MURDER. We find out that Frank owed Sam one because he admitted to Sam emotionally that he’s partially responsible for Annalise losing her baby. He agreed to take hush money to bug Annalise, and the Mahoneys realized she was going to go rat on them. The car was no accident. Sam says he owed him one and that’s what he called in to kill Lila. I’m not sure if this means Frank was always the dark and dirty person we think he is? I think he still is though, he’s way too comfortable with it.

Bonnie tries to cover for him but Annalise is like noooope. Frank’s already gone anyway. This breaks my heart because I love the three of them as a power group, and I do genuinely believe that Frank cares for Annalise. Which might be why his guilt has led him to walk away. Hmmm. We’ll see it he comes back. Also he looked really pissed off when Wes says that Mahoney was his father, and when Wes approaches Wallace, he gets shot to death right in front of him. ALSO TERRIBLE LUCK FOR WES. Wow. Was it Frank? Hmmmm I think that would be too obvious. I’m going to guess that someone new will be the killer this time, perhaps Laurel? She has been closer to Wes this season. I’m not sure going forward what we will be doing, but I’m in. Is this the close on the Hapstall mystery though since Caleb is guilty and he’s dead? I hope so, I mean I did like aspects of it, but I don’t think it’s something that needs to continue on. It feels well wrapped up. With Frank’s confession about Lila, technically that one is wrapped up too. So what’s next? I don’t know, but I want to know.

Overall this was a great season. They were still awesome and intense and made you want to watch every week. The characters have deepened their relationships, some good and some bad. Asher joined murder squad. So did Bonnie, technically, with her murder of Rebecca. I wonder how early out they plan for the next major storyline, because they could already know what they want to do now. Viola Davis as always is a queen, may all bow before her. I want to see more Eve next season. MAKE HER A MAIN CHARACTER. Scream it out loooud. But yes. Overall very pleased with it. I don’t want to wait. 😦
