There are spoilers in this review. Duh.

This show perfectly works with Halloween, so it’s fun for them to embrace the holiday in all its ridiculousness. As usual, Scream Queens delights me for every minute of its screen time. The mystery isn’t really that important, because it’s the dialogue and the insane characters that sell the show. While I’m not a huge fan of Ryan Murphy in general, his scathing sense of humor has always been my favorite element of his writing. Although I should say Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk, since the two of them create a lot of work together, and Brad’s currently the real showrunner for Scream Queens.  Previously, the Red Devil serial killer is murdering women from the Kappa house. And everyone else who gets in their way. Basically just terrorizing the campus any way possible. There’s at least more than one of them. Main character Grace thinks that the Red Devil is a baby whose mother died from the neglect of her sorority sisters during a party night. Meanwhile the leader of the Kappa house Chanel is going head to head with new Kappa badass Zayday who wants to become president. Unfortunately for her last episode she was kidnapped.

Right off the bat the question is why Zayday was kidnapped and not killed. We see probably the answer, which is that whoever is the Red Devil in this scene has feelings for her. We haven’t seen anyone on the show in love with her yet, right? Hmmm! Except for possibly the young man who encouraged her to run for President. His name is escaping me. Grace keeps trying to get everyone to go save her friend, and finally her father, Gigi, Denise, and Pete find the Red Devil’s secret lair. Denise accidentally tasers Gigi, but Gigi successfully tasers the Red Devil. Instead of them figuring out who he is or capturing him, they run. Gigi does it on purpose, since we see her later speak to another Red Devil and say “he has to go.” I assume she’s talking about the sloppy one who loves Zayday and made a mess for them. Is she one of the Devils or is she simply in charge of them? Did they attack her in the house to make her look less suspicious? What was the show for then, if they didn’t see anyone there to pretend in front of? Hmmm! How did she know which person was in the costume? I look forward to these answers. Gigi’s been macking on Grace’s father, both of them obsessed with the 80s, so it’s possible he’s not directly involved. Also funny little note: Denise reveals she too has had sex with Chad. I expect everyone to have sex with him at least once by the end of the season.

The other main plot is Chanel losing control of her house. Chanel #6 (Hester) is secretly hoping to get Zayday to win so she can be her Cheney. Chanel #5 is getting tortured by Chanel and threatened with a sex tape if she doesn’t put her life at risk and light all the candles in a maze. See Chanel loves throwing Halloween parties, but Munsch says the campus is closed for Halloween. So she plans on throwing one at 12:01 am the next day. But Chanel #5 knows that she will be murdered since the Red Devil will be out. She goes with her boyfriends and picks one over the other; why they chose this minute to confront her, who knows. But the one who dies (Dodger?) probably deserves it if he’s going to waste time arguing with her while a killer is going after them. Chanel gets arrested for Ms. Bean’s murder, but she is bailed out by Chanel #3. Bailed out but not cleared? She has an Orange is the New Black moment beforehand which is pretty funny, and the sad truth that her father briefly disowns her to take attention off himself.

So what’s next? What is up with Gigi? Now I assume she’s the one who raised the baby, the traumatized girl who was holding the baby while her friend died in the tub. But the baby was a girl. We know at least one boy is a Red Devil. I don’t think he’s the one who loves Zayday since he is gay and in love with Chad. This is all so confusing! In any case, like I said, it’s not really about the mystery. It’s about the hilarious writing, the weird but fun characters, and the constant jokes about the horror genre. While it’s never actually scary, it doesn’t need to be. This is comic horror. And since I’m a wuss I’m glad it never scares me. It’s too ridiculous to be scary. Also apparently the guy without arms is alive? Nice! I look forward to Scream Queens every week. I don’t know how long they can keep it going, but for now, it’s just what I want.
