There are spoilers in this review. Duh.

Okay it looks like I decided to write about Scream Queens every week after all. I wasn’t sure if this was a show that was going to give material for a weekly recap, but clearly I’m wrong, because there’s so much I want to say about it. Like how it’s hilarious and makes me laugh out loud through the entire episode. Because a lot of time you might say lol but you’re not actually laughing, it’s just an indication you find something funny. No I actually laugh while watching this. It’s completely ridiculous. There is nothing remotely serious about it, it’s clearly riffing off horror movies and also probably Mean Girls type of movies too. I think Ryan Murphy does best when he doesn’t care at all, when there’s no attempt at serious storylines, when they just have this wicked sense of humor where everyone’s outrageous stereotypes. Previously on Scream Queens, there’s a serial killer in a Red Devil costume who is killing members of the Kappa sorority. New girl Grace thinks it might be linked to the death of a Kappa sister in childbirth from neglect twenty years before. Sorority leader Chanel is furious that Dean Munsch is forcing her to accept all pledges to the house, so now they’re all in danger. Who is the killer? No idea, but there’s at least more than one, as we saw apparent murder victim Boone having faked his death with the other killer. There might be a whole group of them. Maybe everyone is the Red Devil!

This week they realize that Chanel #2, who we saw killed after a hilarious text conversation and then Tweet in the premiere, is gone. We know that the Chanels covered her death up. Someone keeps posting on Chanel #2’s Instagram, but the pictures seem to be of her dead, so it feels like the killers are joking around. They clearly have a sense of humor. Denise, the best character on this show, quickly points out that she’s dead because she tweeted about it, and Grace investigates by talking to her parents. Cordelia Chase! I mean Charisma Carpenter is her mother. They say that Chanel #2 was a former alcoholic and that she was sleeping with Chanel’s boyfriend Chad. Chad breaks up with Chanel again because he’s mourning Boone and she’s not cool enough for him. She decides to make over Hester to prove that the “loser” pledges can be hot too. This of course is causing Hester a lot of pain due to her scoliosis, but she is fine with it since she wants to be Chanel #6. I’d say watch it Hester, the Chanels are dropping like flies, but so are the pledges in general so either way they’re all in danger.

Grace is frustrated when her father Wes starts teaching one of her own classes, knowing he’s hanging around to protect/stalk her. Wes is indicated as a possible killer after showing the Texas Chainsaw Massacre and the weapons of choice this week for the Red Devils are chainsaws. I still think he’s a good candidate even if we’re supposed to think he’s too obvious at this point. Munsch keeps trying to seduce him, while he’s flirty and getting along with Gigi. Munsch and Gigi sleep over at the Kappa house and the Red Devil attacks Gigi. Wes comes to the rescue, and accuses Munsch at the end of the episode of being the killer. Possibly she could have gotten the chainsaw from beneath Zay’s bed. Denise confronts her about that earlier, but she says her grandmother sent it as protection. LOL. This show I swear. We also see the new mascot the ice cream cone get murdered by the Red Devil, and then the frat boys take on both Red Devils in a bloodbath. That’s what happens when people take bats to a chainsaw battle. This is the scene and it is utter magic.

Next week, it looks like Grace is going to talk to one of the girls who was there the night the baby was born. I also sort of suspect Gigi was? There’s something more to her for sure. I have to say one of my favorite things about this show is how everyone’s pretty badass? Like even the characters who have gotten killed usually have some kind of fight in them first, outside of the girl who got her head mowed off. Chanel #2 managed to kick the Red Devil before she died over a tweet, the ice cream mascot did a fair job of fighting off before he died, and Gigi survived it. I always wanted people in horror movies to fight just a little more, because these people are still just humans in creepy suits. It’s not like we’ve seen them do anything particularly skilled so far outside of knowing when to strike. The only real criticism I have is that Grace is maybe? the protagonist of the show, and she’s clearly the most dull of the group. I get that the character needs to be since she’s pushing forward the actual plot, but she hasn’t said a single line I really found funny so far and I keep going ugh let’s go back to the fun characters. This show remains one of my favorite of the current season. I mentioned before I have a serious fondness for stories that don’t take themselves seriously, especially when their entire purpose is one big joke. And despite that,  I am genuinely curious about who the Red Devil is. It’s probably going to be a very funny reveal. Also did anyone notice that the Red Devil who is probably Boone couldn’t hurt Chad when he was unconscious? Yup noticed that. I anticipate the next episode with a smile, even if I still can’t really recommend this show to anyone as a serious option to add to their DVR. You either like it or you think it’s dumb, or you like it and think it’s dumb. But it’s not for everyone.
