MARVEL'S AGENTS OF S.H.I.E.L.D. - "Scars" - Skye is torn between her loyalty to S.H.I.E.L.D. and her connection to the Inhumans as tensions rise between the groups -- and Coulson reveals a secret he's been hiding from even those closest to him, on "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.," TUESDAY, MAY 5 (9:00-10:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network. There are spoilers in this review. Also some for Age of Ultron. Duh.

Sometimes I have a hard time watching shows, because I’m highly critical, as you see on this blog, and I also end up sympathizing with the wrong people. Then again, I think a show like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D (AoS from now on) likes to provide us with no black and white answers. I questioned that before, but I think it’s definitely intentional now. The question of the Inhumans here is not unlike that of the X-Men: you have these people with extremely dangerous powers. Are they going to help humanity even if humanity hates and fears them, or are they going to fight back? It’s important that Jiaying’s motivations here are understandable. She’s definitely doing the wrong thing, but you can understand why she is doing this thing. I believe Gonzales made seriously bad mistakes in this conversation, and that if Coulson was there it might have gone differently. But Raina was right, and depending on her precog abilities, she always saw Gonzales as the person in that meeting. I┬álike complicated sides of things, although I worry sometimes that it makes the audience feel wishy washy on it. Or polarizing. Hmmm. Well previously on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, Skye met her people the Inhumans and found her mother Jiaying, who is in charge of them. The two types of SHIELD came together finally, despite some bickering, and saved Skye’s friend and Mike Peterson. Age of Ultron was set up by Coulson revealing to know where Loki’s scepter was, and that’s been his big secret, working for the Avengers and the helicarrier Fury made.

I was surprised with how minimal the Age of Ultron story impacted this one, although I do believe there are subtle ones that drive this plot. Gonzales was not wrong that this is an example of how superpowered people (even if Tony has no real powers technically) are dangerous and have no oversight. This is where Civil War is starting right here. His way of thinking isn’t wrong, exactly, but it does lack a certain type of empathy for the other side. It’s not to say he’s cold exactly, but he does see them as weapons, and he does want to control them to a degree. Which is not a good thing at all. The reality is that they are able to find the Inhumans now when Gordon and Raina start jumping around the base, and it means the Inhumans no longer have their secrecy. This is terrifying to them, and for good reason. Because here’s the thing: SHIELD does want to index them. For an Inhuman, who has spent this time hiding and finding peace without being studied by anyone else, this is the worst possible scenario. Especially for Jiaying, who was experimented on by Hydra. She was torn into pieces, her organs taken out, it was horrific. And regardless of how SHIELD is trying to get itself together now, it was still part of Hydra for awhile there. There is no reason at all the Inhumans should trust SHIELD, especially not when they’re openly talking about indexing and testing powers. Ha ha ha no.

Agents-of-SHIELD-Scars-630x420At first Coulson is going to go and meet with Jiaying, after Skye pleads with him to try to make peace. But Gonzales insists on going instead, mostly because Coulson cannot be impartial when it comes to Skye. If Coulson was there, things would have probably gone differently though. Jiaying might have been more cautious since she knew how much Skye loves him, and he has a reputation for being sympathetic with superpowered people. She might not have felt threatened by him. Yet that’s not what happened. Gonzales compares his leg injury to the scars she sustained, which is incredibly stupid and ignorant. It is not the same thing at all, it’s not even in the same realm. And then he tells her that they want to index her people. In my head I went this is the worst possible approach to a peaceful meeting. You remind her of her trauma, insult her with comparing your own, and then feed her paranoia and fear about what SHIELD intends for her people. Keep in mind that Hydra used to have full access to this index; it is not at all as safe as they might hope. So Jiaying goes the way of starting a war with SHIELD, killing Gonzales and then shooting herself to claim self-defense. Personally, I don’t blame her. She’s doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. It’s a sucky place to be in, and I fear for the Inhumans.

Raina was right all along, and the show does a great job of making us doubt her. It looks like she’s just power hungry, and maybe she is, but she was also right. Cal is his weird and hilarious self as usual, but he agrees to hand himself over to SHIELD as a sign of good faith. Simmons admits to trying to kill Ward and that she’s only sorry it didn’t work, because whatever he does from there is on her. This proves fateful as Kara and Ward kidnap Bobbi Morse immediately afterward. Apparently Bobbi is partially responsible for Kara being captured while she was pretending to be Hydra. I’m intrigued to see where this is going. I still very much appreciate this show’s refusal to “redeem” Ward. Nope. Mack quits the team, and I don’t really care? I like him okay, and it’s sad that his reasons are he flat out doesn’t trust Coulson or want to work for him. Fair enough. Bye Mack! I am so glad to hear that the spin-off they had planned for Bobbi and Hunter is not happening now. I’d rather keep them on the show, and they don’t need another spin-off.

So where is this headed? War between the two groups, obviously. Skye is smack dab in the middle of her mother and people, and Coulson and her found family. That’s going to be difficult. I think this is all leading to the eventual Civil War, or it’s the early levels of it. Also the Inhumans have their own movie some day soon. People have rumored that it’s possible someone will intentionally use the crystals on civilians. It would be very Magneto of them, like in the first X-Men movie when he tried to turn everyone into humans. The question about that though is they know only some people can turn, everyone else dies. Hmmm. Can’t wait for the finale!
